About Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore– the name is familiar to almost every Indian- consciously or unconsciously. The national anthem of India- the pride of the nation that binds every citizen of this country with a sense of belongingness and universal brotherhood is composed by Tagore who is also known as Bishakabi ( the poet of the world).

Rabindranath Tagore is a part of every Bengali’s life while they grow up. His poems, short stories, plays and music are some of the first cultural exposures for Bengalis.

7th May which is the birth anniversary of this noble laureate is indeed a day not only to commemorate the great poet but also to celebrate Tagore’s intrinsic connection with the lives of Bengalis as we mark the 160th birthday of Gurudev.

Rabi Thakur as we call him was more than a poet. He was a visionary who believed in mystic harmony between man and nature. In his verse, nature was the biggest celebration around us, nurturing, sustaining human lives since eternity. In the 21st century, as humankind faces the unprecedented danger of climate change, Tagore’s vision of nature comes alive showing his prolific ability to capture the universal truth around us.

During the era of the Indian freedom struggle, the writing of Tagore was imbued with the nationalistic impulse, encouraging people to achieve complete freedom from foreign imperial rule. His vision of freedom culminated in composing two national anthems for two independent nations, India and Bangladesh. His love for his motherland surpassed any glory that was offered as he renounced the ‘Knight’ title by the former British Majesty as a mark of his protest against the oppression of his countrymen.

It is this universal appeal of Tagore’s vision, writing, and theories that makes him the cultural icon not only for Bengalis per se but for every Indian who shares a love for literature and ideas.

Rabindranath Tagore Poems

Waiting

The song I came to sing

remains unsung to this day.

I have spent my days in stringing

and in unstringing my instrument.

The time has not come true,

the words have not been rightly set;

only there is the agony

of wishing in my heart….

Rabindranath Tagore

Geetanjali

Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life.

This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills and dales, and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new.

At the immortal touch of thy hands, my little heart loses its limits in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable.

Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still, there is room to fill.

Rabindranath Tagore

Where the mind is without fear

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high

Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments

By narrow domestic walls

Where words come out from the depth of truth

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way

Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit

Where the mind is led forward by thee

Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
